Free Measuring Tool - or
Shareware Calipers for CSS Debugging Reviewed
category: CSS
Some sort of screen measuring tool is absolutely required for debugging CSS, especially weird cross browser problems. The best thing I've seen for measuring on screen, down to the nearest pixel, the size of box, margin, or whatever, is Iconico's Screen Calipers. The product, now in version 3.1, is free for the download. There's a charge of $19.50 to unlock enhancements to the basic fully functional product, but I find it perfectly usable as it is.
The vendor says, "The Screen Calipers are a unique on-screen measurement tool, similar to a screen ruler. They resemble real life vernier calipers in both form and function." If you don't know what vernier calipers are or how they work, visit Iconico's web site. This is a case where the picture is indeed worth 1000 words. Suffice it to say, a caliper design is much easier to use on-screen than any sort of ruler type of device, bar none.
