View Source Stopped Working in IE6 XP  - or

IE 6 Windows XP - View Source Fails to Consistently Open Notepad

category: software

When you choose View, and then View Source in IE6, Notepad is supposed to open, showing the source of the web page the browser is displaying as a text file. Under Windows XP, not Win2000 or Win98, IE6 will intermittently fail to open Notepad. When Notepad fails to open, the Edit option in the File menu is also grayed out.

Is there a pattern to this? The only pattern that counts is that this failure happens whenever you really need to look at the source code of a page; beyond that it's academic because the fix is quick and easy. Choose Tools, Internet Options, and on the General tab under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
