Spyware? Sounds a Little Paranoid, but Adware... - or
Lavasoft's Free Ad-Aware SE Personal Reviewed
category: spamming, software
When it comes to the spyware, I don't think there's much out there between third party cookies and a hardware or software keyboard stroke recorder (only the Feds), except maybe the Google taskbar, which just doesn't scare me. Now, adware, that's a different story.

Mask from Image Made Easier - or
Selectively Invert with the Paintbrush in Photoshop
category: digital photography and image editing
If you're creating a mask in Photoshop using a copy of the image itself, you might increase the contrast of mask layer with levels, run the High-Pass filter, and then increase the contrast again, hoping for nice black edges with a white glow around them. Unfortunately, what you get most of the time is 80 percent black against white and 20 percent white against black, or the reverse.

The War on Spam Continues - or
Enhancing Outlook 2003 Junk E-mail Filters
category: spamming
Outlook 2003 has a very good and completely automatic junk e-mail filter. If you click Actions, Junk E-mail, and then Options, you will get a dialog box where you can express just how serious you are about spam. If you feel the way I do, you will choose the radio button next to High: Most junk e-mail is caught, but some regular mail may be caught as well... Outlook will then move messages that appear to be junk e-mail, as they are downloaded, into a special Junk E-mail folder. This functionality works very well, and when you add the Safe Senders and Blocked Senders list options, shown on the same dialogue, you almost have the spammers where you want them. In this context, however, almost is a big word.

Free Measuring Tool - or
Shareware Calipers for CSS Debugging Reviewed
category: CSS
Some sort of screen measuring tool is absolutely required for debugging CSS, especially weird cross browser problems. The best thing I've seen for measuring on screen, down to the nearest pixel, the size of box, margin, or whatever, is Iconico's Screen Calipers. The product, now in version 3.1, is free for the download. There's a charge of $19.50 to unlock enhancements to the basic fully functional product, but I find it perfectly usable as it is.
