You Don't Need to Begin at the Beginning - or
Important Rule of Writing
category: writing
Writing is a big chore for many people. They push the task off onto some other person, anything to avoid staring at a blank screen or piece of paper. These people often seem to have a lot to say, but they don't know how to get started. They think they have to start at the beginning.

Deke McClelland's Photoshop CS Bible, Professional Edition, Review - or
Review of Photoshop CS Bible, Professional Edition
category: graphics, digital photography and image editing
Photoshop 7, CS, and CS2 Bibles, the Professional Editions, by Deke McClelland et al, and published by Wiley, are pretty much hard cover, full color reprints of the standard editions, except there is a lot of stuff missing, and they cost $20.00 dollars more. The pitch is that professionals already know the missing stuff, so why add to the weight of the book unnecessarily, but the reality is you will buy two copies of the exact same book expecting to find reference detail in the standard edition and advanced techniques in the professional edition, and you won't.

The Evils of Email
category: people, writing
I love email, but I hate what it has done to writing. I love the quick communication, I love the ability to collaborate so easily, I love being able to write rather than talk. Yes, I'm one of those people who usually prefers to write a memo rather than to telephone. For me, writing is often easier than talking. I know the rest of the world does not share my predilections.

Still More Photoshop Effects with Clouds - or
Photoshop Clouds and Difference Clouds Filters - Making Water
category: graphics, digital photography and image editing
Photoshop's Clouds filter creates a fill of random haze between the foreground and background colors using Perlin-based fractal noise resembling natural clouds. The Difference Clouds Filter creates a cumulative effect exactly like duplicating the Clouds Results layer and applying the Difference Blend mode. OK, we've made a passing cloud in the foreground of a mountain scene and created a storm with lightning in the same scene using these filters; this time we're going to set Buckingham Palace's famous Changing of the Guard under water.

Photoshop's Clouds filter creates a fill of random haze between the foreground and background colors using Perlin-based fractal noise resembling natural clouds. The Difference Clouds Filter creates a cumulative effect exactly like duplicating the Clouds results layer and applying the difference blend mode. Colors can be intensified by pressing and holding the shift key while applying these filters. Any repeating texture made with Clouds and Difference Clouds will tile perfectly if you use image dimensions based on powers of two, such as 128, 256, or 512 pixels. OK, that's cool, but what can you do with these filters?

The Simplest Problem Fixes
category: hardware, software
I am often called on to solve the computer problems of friends, relatives, and various and sundry co-workers. It can be fun to come up with a solution to a weird problem, but I've had a rash of routine problems to solve, so routine that I hope to record them here and avoid having to repeat any of these answers ever again.

Ink to Light Conversion Chart - or
Photoshop Eight Bit Luminosity to Percent of Gray Conversion Reference
category: graphics, digital photography and image editing
Grayscale images, or RGB images by channel, are described and manipulated in Photoshop by luminosity values ranging from 0-255. When viewed on screen, black is no light or 0, and white is maximum light or 255. When printed, an image is described in terms of ink needed to produce a given result on paper. No ink or 0% is white, and maximum ink or 100% is black, just the reverse. Sometimes you need to know that 50% gray is 128, or 3% gray is 248. Photoshop runs on a computer and can make these kinds of conversions quickly; you and I could use a chart. The Conversion Reference can be found in the continued portion of this entry.
